BLOCK OUT THE NOISE

One of the mottos that guide me on my personal fitness journey and advice that I share with my clients early on in their journey, is to block out the noise. I consider “noise” to be any distraction, unsolicited opinion or element that stands in the way and creates unnecessary resistance between you and what you want to achieve.

When I started my fitness journey 14 years ago at the age of 14, shortly after losing my mom to breast cancer, I had so many people in my ear telling me things like “Be careful not to overdo it “and “You don’t want to get too bulky “and the famous “Be careful or you’ll start looking like a man”. If I listened to these people and stopped, or didn’t chase my passion, I wouldn’t be on the path that I’m on today. Thankfully, I had a strong mind and a strong support system within my family that encouraged me to excel in the fitness space, and appreciated that the start of my journey was rooted in the therapeutic relief that I got from working out, which got me through the hardest stages of my life after losing my mom.

I had so many people in my ear telling me things like “Be careful not to overdo it “and “You don’t want to get too bulky “and the famous “Be careful or you’ll start looking like a man”. If I listened to these people, and stopped, or didn’t chase my passion, I wouldn’t be on the path that I’m on today.

I think what upsets me most about all the “noise” that typically comes along with women deciding to embark on fitness journeys and begin strength training, is that the noise-makers don’t know these women’s “why”. I am a firm believer that we all reserve the right to do what makes us happy and chase what sets our souls on fire, and that looks different for everyone. I learned at that young age that it’s not our responsibility to make people understand our decisions but it is our responsibility to do what’s best for us. I knew fitness was going to be a part of my life forever, and that no one and nothing would change that.

Wherever you are on your fitness journey, blocking out the noise is so important. Learning to focus on your “why” staying the course, and surrounding yourself with people that support you is key. The noise never really goes away, to this day, 14 years after starting my journey the noise is still there, it sounds and looks different, but people still sometimes feel the need to share their unsolicited opinions and advice and project their insecurities. I’ve mastered the art of blocking it out and keeping it moving, and you should too. The more you do it, the more natural it becomes. I realize that a lot of the comments and words have very little to do with me personally and more to do with the battles that the commenter is fighting, so I learn to either not respond or to do so gracefully, and most times block and move on.

I hope you’ll continue to chase your dreams and block out the noise while you do what you feel is best for you. Keep your tribe and supporters close, stay the course and embrace the journey in its entirety. Someone is waiting to be inspired by your journey.
