Throughout my years of training and bodybuilding, a question that is often asked is, “Where do you find your motivation to stay on track daily?”. My response was always the same, but over the last few years, it has changed and evolved from the experiences I’ve had.

Motivation is defined as the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way. Discipline is defined as the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behaviour, using punishment to correct disobedience. Now, the definition of a discipline may seem a bit harsh or extreme when you think about how you would normally define it. However, when you think about it, if you lack discipline, there’s usually some sort of negative repercussion.

The best advice I can give to someone who is looking to start a healthy lifestyle or even add to the one they have created already is to create daily routines that you not only can follow but also ones that ensure success. What do daily routines require? Surely not motivation, but discipline; discipline to get the tasks done that need to be completed, discipline to choose foods that will fuel your body, and discipline to move your body to maintain your health.

Balance is another key to success. Sure, discipline is great and is required to ensure success, however, making sure that there is a balance between your discipline and time for enjoyment, is key to long-term success.

Now routines do require discipline, but I’m not saying that you can never break that routine. Everyone’s routine looks different; therefore, everyone’s version of balance is different. Balance is another key to success. Sure, discipline is great and is required to ensure success, however, making sure that there is a balance between your discipline and time for enjoyment, is key to long-term success.

Overall, you may not always be motivated. Work may be draining, relationships may be strained, or just life may hit you in a way that brings you down unexpectedly. The difference between those who are successful in achieving their goals and those who are not is those who have the discipline to do what needs to be done when things get hard. They knew what their balance was to be productive but to also keep everything else in their life right and strong.

Living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t require motivation. It requires discipline and balance. Finding yours will ensure that you unlock the door to your success.
